The Many Faces of ENGELMANN...
with Jannis Buddatsch

In the series FROM OUR WALLS, members of the wider KÖNIG GALERIE community talk about works in the gallery that resonate with them personally. In this edition, Jannis Buddatsch, Visitor Service at KÖNIG GALERIE, introduces ENGELMANN by German sculptor Stephan Balkenhol, presented at St. Agnes. One of the most renowned German sculptors of his generation, Balkenhol is known for his colored wood sculptures, as well as his drawings, prints, and bronze works. Since the early 1980s, he has focused on figuration and the human figure.

Balkenhol’s figures often depict everyday people rather than heroes or historical and religious figures. ENGELMANN presents a standing male figure in a white shirt and black trousers. Made from patinated and painted bronze, the sculpture reflects Balkenhol’s interest in the human figure while leaving the character and expression of the figure deliberately open.

For Jannis, this ambiguity is an important part of the work. We don’t know whether the figure is smiling, sad, or simply thinking, allowing viewers to form their own interpretations and project their thoughts and feelings onto the sculpture.

Jannis also gives guided tours at St. Agnes, offering visitors the opportunity to learn more about the exhibitions and the gallery, book a guided tour. For lager groups please contact info@koeniggalerie.com.
