Honoring Bauhaus...
with Aurélien Calpas

In the series FROM OUR WALLS, members of the team talk about works in the gallery that resonate with them personally. Today, Aurélien Calpas, Director from KÖNIG GALERIE introduces IN THE GERMAN WEST by Cologne-based artist Johannes Wohnseifer, a painting that transforms an everyday urban scene into a powerful, contemplative image.

Painted in 2026, IN THE GERMAN WEST captures a typical urban landscape beneath an afternoon sky that seems to catch fire. The title’s reference to “Bauhaus” connects the work to the legacy of the avant-garde German art movement of the 1920s, while Wohnseifer’s distinctive visual language draws on pop culture, graphic design, and advertising.

For Aurélien Calpas, the painting’s sense of speed and atmosphere makes it particularly striking. It reflects Wohnseifer’s ability to take familiar surroundings and transform them into something visually charged and contemplative.
