Love Lunch in Tokyo...
with Danaï Loukas

In the series FROM OUR WALLS, members of the team talk about works in the gallery that resonate with them personally. Today, Danai, Senior Director, Sales at KÖNIG GALERIE, introduces LOVE LUNCH IN TOKYO by Johanna Dumet, a work that beautifully captures the artist’s ability to transform personal memories and everyday moments into expressive, emotionally charged paintings.

LOVE LUNCH IN TOKYO is one of Dumet’s signature table scenes. Inspired by a lunch she shared in Tokyo with her then-fiancé, sculptor Manuel Wroblewski, shortly after her solo exhibition at KÖNIG SEOUL, the painting recreates the meal while preserving the atmosphere and memories connected to that moment. As in many of her works, Dumet incorporates personal elements into the composition—in this case, the packaging from a Louis Vuitton × Yayoi Kusama bag she purchased during the trip, reflecting both the Tokyo setting and her background in fashion design.

For Danai, this piece is a quintessential Johanna Dumet painting: intimate, vibrant and deeply personal. Combining everyday rituals with treasured objects and lasting memories, it perfectly demonstrates how Dumet transforms ordinary experiences into works filled with emotion and narrative.
