CLAUDIA COMTE
THE ITALIAN BUNNIES IN SHANGHAI

TAIKOO LI QIANTAN, SHANGHAI, CHINA
PERMANENT INSTALLATION SINCE 2022 Acclaimed Swiss artist Claudia Comte’s oeuvre connects the natural world and traditional craftsmanship with modern technologies. "The Italian Bunnies in Shanghai, Comte's first permanent public artwork on the Chinese Mainland, consists of seven rabbit-ear-shaped sculptures namely Pietro, Properzia, Michelangelo, Guido, Leonardo, Donatello, and Gian Lorenzo. They are based on wood bunnies she initially hand-carved with her signature tool – a chainsaw – which were then 3D scanned, scaled up, and carved from a single block of Bardiglio marble.Comte often imbues a sense of playfulness and humor into her works that juxtaposed with the seriousness of the environmental subjects she explores. The curvaceous marble sculptures bearing names such as Michelangelo and Leonardo are a tribute to some of the greatest Italian Renaissance sculptors in history, while some associate with the heroes from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.Introducing art as joy in the public space at Taikoo Li Qiantan, Comte invites viewers to be immersed and muse on their interconnected relationship with the organic world.
