Ahead of the opening of ECHOTROPIA, KÖNIG GALERIE visited Christian Achenbach in his Berlin studio while preparations for the exhibition were still underway.Stepping into the studio felt like entering one of Achenbach's own imagined landscapes. The walls were covered with works in progress—rolling hills, lush flora, and an extraordinary spectrum of vibrant colors—as the artist moved between multiple paintings. Dominating the space was GENESIS, the monumental painting that now occupies the central wall of the Nave at St. Agnes. Seeing it in the studio, stretching from nearly floor to ceiling, offered a rare glimpse into the scale and intensity of Achenbach's creative process.
In this conversation, Achenbach reflects on painting as an intuitive practice shaped by color, composition, rhythm, and the experience of landscape rather than narrative. His works invite the eye to wander like music, creating spaces where light, memory, and perception resonate.
