"Not making things happen, but letting them happen" is one of the basic principles in the painterly work of Berlin-based Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura. In her vividly gestural, vital, irritating and sometimes fairy-tale-like paintings, the artist tells of the dreams, struggles and conflicts of human life. The world of nature and the world of things interpenetrate in her works just as they merge influences from the Western and Eastern cultural spheres, between which the artist moves. It is precisely this unique synthesis of both cultures, which is visible in Leiko Ikemura's work, that establishes her international reputation as one of the most important Japanese artists of the present day.Leiko Ikemura (*1951, Japan) lived after studying art in Granada and Seville, first in Zurich, later in Cologne, and today in Berlin. Her artistic work includes paintings, sculptures and drawings.
