K.H. Hödicke is one of Germany’s most important pioneers of New Figuration. On the occasion of his 70th birthday, his large-format charcoal drawings are published for the first time as an artist's book. The entire spectrum from unerring, rapid sketches to modulated images is explored. The collection concentrates on the second half of the 1970s, during which Hödicke developed his unmistakable form of expression in figurative painting, whose influence on the young Berlin art scene of the 1980s cannot be overestimated. Thematically, the drawings circle the living space of Berlin in magnificent cityscapes, studio pictures, interiors, and portraits. The images of the big city are interspersed with sketches from Lapland and Thailand in a direct or ironically refracted view.
