In her mostly monumental works, Joana Vasconcelos combines different materials, fabrics and everyday objects to create an idiosyncratic kind of surreal object art. Her works deal with questions of cultural identity and gender dimensions and show points of contact with artistic strategies that also inspired Max Ernst and the Surrealists. The publication accompanying the artist's first museum exhibition in Germany presents early and current works in combination with installation views and provides in-depth insights into Joana Vasconcelos' unusual way of working.
