Holiday

The painting Holiday is a landscape, a platform, a map or a screen, a surface of accumulation where references and gestures are layered like browser tabs or Photoshop layers. It deals with appropriation, bricolage and subjectivity. Here, as in the other paintings in the group, Fourniau was interested in the concept of atemporality, theorised by the science fiction writer William Gibson. This concept describes contemporary creations that do not reflect their time in any way, whether through their style, content or medium. Applied to painting, this form of atemporality results in absolute historical freedom. Freed from any search for novelty specific to its time, the work allows all periods to coexist simultaneously. The artist therefore wanted to create an ironic counterpoint by designating the painting with a word that anchors it precisely in the present time and in an era.
