LIVING ARCHITECTURE: CASA BATLLÓ

CASA BATLLÓ, BARCELONA, SPAIN
MAY 2022
Refik Anadol projected an AI-generated, real-time, moving-image work on the façade of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Casa Batlló, in Barcelona that was subsequently auctioned as an NFT. The house was designed by the famed architect, Antoni Gaudí, and the former residence has since become a popular tourist attraction in the Spanish city, celebrated for its organic, undulating exterior. LIVING ARCHITECTURE: CASA BATLLÓ was composed of data derived from local image banks and archives, which, when fed into Anadol’s pioneering AI algorithms, rippled across the surfaces of Gaudí’s building. In concert with the exterior projection, the NFT was also displayed in the interior rooms. The NFT was then auctioned at Christie’s for over one million dollars, the proceeds of which went to the Aprenem Autism and Adana Foundations, whose work supports individuals with neurodivergence (autism, dyslexia, ADHD, and others).
