JOANA VASCONCELOS
SOLITAIRE
TERRAZZA DEL PINCIO, ROME, ITALY
18 JANUARY – 31 MAY 2026
The theme of desire is at the epicenter of this creation by Joana Vasconcelos, which reproduces an engagement ring at a monumental scale. A representation of the love and commitment between two people that consumer society would eventually transform into a symbol of status and power. The artist's SOLITAIRE is composed of 110 golden wheel rims creating a circumference crowned by an inverted pyramid consisting of 1,450 crystal whisky glasses, simulating a giant diamond.
By combining two of the most stereotypical symbols of luxury cars and diamonds, Joana Vasconcelos recreates one of the most coveted objects in the world, while simultaneously questioning male and female roles in today's society. Created in 2018 for the exterior of the Guggenheim Bilbao as part of the ‘I'm Your Mirror’ exhibition, this piece has also travelled to the Kunsthal in Rotterdam, the Serralves Museum Park, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and, more recently, MAAT.
