CLAUDIA COMTE
BLACK AND WHITE CIRCLES IN THE SKY

MÜNSTERHOF, ZURICH, SWITZERLAND
15 AUGUST – 15 SEPTEMBER 2017

In the summer of 2017, Comte was commissioned to produce a public artwork at the Münsterhof Platz which is one of the most popular places for locals to meet and congregate in Zurich. She created an expansive sail to suspend over the entire platz. The polyester sails were printed with large black and white concentric circles emulating the rings of water created by a fountain directly below the square. The sail’s function was to create shade for the town's residents over the summer months. Additionally, a large circular platform was placed in the center of the square to offer people a place to lay down and look up at the sails pattern above them. A surprising factor, discovered later, was that many people used the platform as a place to dance.
