Reduction doesn’t make things simpler; it makes them more precise. In this short interview, artist Franz Stein explains how reducing a painting to its essentials is not about showing less, but about finding the perfect balance between presence and absence. By pushing himself to strip his work down as much as possible, Stein creates space for viewers to explore it on their own terms and form their own emotional connections with it. At the same time, he reflects on the role of his titles and how they might gently guide, influence or complicate the open process of interpretation.

FRANZ STEIN

Franz Stein (b. 1989 in Bayreuth, Germany) studied from 2018 to 2025 at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in the class of Gregor Hildebrandt, becoming his master student in 2023. Supported by an Erasmus scholarship, he spent the academic year 2023–2024 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the class of Daniel Richter.

Stein’s paintings are developed through a process of layering numerous thin coats of acrylic paint on canvas. Overlapping lines, strokes, dots, and fields—applied with oil pastel, charcoal, and spray paint—form the visual structure of his works.
