Jorinde Voigt has been investigating and rendering in material terms the ephemeral qualities of light, shadow, and in this unique edition, rainbows. The prismatic display of light is captured in the centre of the ditone print, each of which is hand-finished with the addition of gold leaf. The overall effect is like a shimmering horizon of sunlight surrounding two upside down rainbows, whose curved form moves the entire composition toward the lower reaches of the work. Voigt shows not how the world might be, but how it already is, only more so, with greater concentration and intensity. Threaded within the large patches of sunbathed oranges and yellows are Voigt’s trademark linear passages that return the gaze to the flat surface of the composition, creating a delicate push-pull between the effects of the glowing, gilded sections of the work and their material reality in two-dimensions. In Voigt’s hands, this double movement is not a tension or contrast, rather, as the title of the edition suggests, it is immersive, folding the full perceptual field into an infinite plain of experience. Such “studies”, as Voigt calls them, propose a means of reaching back to moments of visual encounters that exist prior to consciousness or thought, what today is referred to as “affect”.
