The paintings with which Matthias Weischer (*1973) gained international recognition show interiors, sparse interiors. Decorative elements and shifted perspectives constitute a confusing spatial effect in them that puts the viewer's perception to the test. Matthias Weischer's sketchy and spontaneous drawings represent a second, formally very independent strand of work. Nevertheless, both genres interpenetrate at times. Thus, his drawings take up ideas that have already been implemented in painting, or hints of pictorial elements emerge that later find their way into painting. The first catalog of Weischer's drawings appears in a more generous folio format, and also bases its pictorial dramaturgy on a loose collection of sketches, thus bearing the special character of an artist's book.
