Villa Nuvola | 18.6.–27.11.2021

18 JUNE - 27 NOVEMBER 2021

In the KÖNIG MONACO Showroom, the KÖNIG GALERIE will be exhibiting works by established as well as emerging contemporary artists at Villa Nuvola from June 18, 2021, in cooperation with LenzWerk Monaco.

Founded in Berlin in 2002, KÖNIG GALERIE represents more than 40 artist that are exhibited in renowned institutions worldwide and are regularly part of international group exhibitions, such as the Venice Biennale and documenta. In 2015, KÖNIG GALERIE obtained the rooms of the former St. Agnes Church in Berlin-Kreuzberg, where interdisciplinary, conceptual, and site-based exhibitions and installations are regularly displayed. In 2017 KÖNIG LONDON opened and in April 2021 KÖNIG SEOUL in the Korean capital.

With the showroom in Monaco, KÖNIG GALERIE is expanding its international presence, following its locations in Berlin, London and Seoul. The historic city-state on the Côte d’Azur has always been a hub for international collectors and has been steadily gaining in importance in recent years. The showroom in Monaco offers KÖNIG a platform to become part of the growing local art scene.

Johann König: “The aim of the KÖNIG MONACO Showroom is to further distribute the program of the KÖNIG GALERIE. Villa Nuvola in Monaco is the next logical step in a series of extraordinary locations: the converted church in Berlin, the former parking garage in London and the MCM Haus in Seoul.”

In Villa Nuvola, KÖNIG has found a unique architectural home on the Mediterranean coast. The villa was built as a pilot project for the iconic LA STELLA tower by Jean Pierre Lott, whose numerous buildings are a major feature of Monaco’s cityscape. With its naturally curved, almost amorphous forms and luminous facade of white mosaic tiles, in its tranquility and elegance the building itself looks like an urban sculpture. The combination of impressive architecture and contemporary art makes the visit an extraordinary visual experience.

In the spectacular premises of Villa Nuvola in the heart of Monaco, the works enter into a dialogue with the interior design. On display is a diverse selection from the gallery’s program, which allows numerous cross-references and associations through the juxtaposition of different artistic practices and finds expression in various media such as painting, sculpture, graphics and photography.

Recurring thematic complexes and motifs evolve around human behavior and social systems, for example in the works of Elmgreen & Dragset, Tatiana Trouvé, Monica Bonvicini, Annette Kelm and Erwin Wurm. Sculptures by Alicja Kwade, Jeppe Hein, and Jose Dávila examine physical laws as well as our relationship to time and the space around us. The medium of painting is represented through the works of Katharina Grosse, Robert Janitz, Matthias Weischer and Johannes Wohnseifer, which are characterized by intense colorfulness as well as subtle restraint. An intensive examination of material and form is a central motif in the artistic practice of Claudia Comte, Andreas Schmitten, Anselm Reyle and David Zink Yi. The graphic works by Jorinde Voigt and Rinus Van de Velde, which are as delicate as they are lively, exemplify the quality of paper as an artistic medium.
