On the occasion of Michael Sailstorfer’s solo exhibition at KÖNIG SEOUL, HEAVY EYES, the artist will release a limited-edition digital print, HEAVY EYES MARILYN. Printed on Hahnemühle paper, the edition features pop icon Marilyn Monroe in black and white with her eyelids decorated with emerald-green eye shadow.
The exhibition HEAVY EYES is comprised of twelve eponymously titled paintings made of lead – one millimetre thick, stretched over frames – each decorated with coloured eyeshadow pigments. Sailstorfer uses lead to emphasize heaviness and highlight the weight of these “sad eyes”, which are then countered by the lightness of glamour and potential joie de vivre. This contrast is exemplified in the portrait of Marilyn Monroe, where her eyes become colourful and radiant on the outside, while the whole world knows the profound heaviness behind them.
