23 SEPTEMBER 2022 – 12 FEBRUARY 2023

On the occasion of the 2022 edition of the Steirischer Herbst festival in Lower Austria, “A War in the Distance”, Zhanna Kadyrova will unveil her latest public commission, which sits atop a reservoir of the Vienna Pipeline. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the pipeline, and Kadyrova’s intervention places a domestic structure atop the public fountain in Graz.
The walls of the structure are transparent, allowing the house to be viewed from inside and out, a gesture that resonates with the current crisis of domestic security under the threat of the Russian invasion of Kadyrova’s native Ukraine.
Flowerbeds and benches around the fountain are also coordinated according to the amplitude of diverging waves from the water source, and the fountains normal path is diverted over the structure, creating the impression that inside of the home, it is in fact raining. Each of the windows of Kadyrova’s house provides seating for visitors to the outdoor work, including a small fountain for drinking. At night, the structure is illuminated, creating a haunting presence of the see-through home within the landscape of the city.
According to the artist, ‘My professional activities function today through the perspective of the unfolding war on the territory of my country. Now, more than ever before, the significance of basic human needs, has become clear. In the situation of a humanitarian  catastrophe, in the occupied Ukrainian cities, people die due to lack of drinking water and hygiene.”
