ART BASEL FILM 2022
Parcours: An itinerary through Basel’s Old Town
Expanding Art Basel’s reach through the city’s old town with a temporary display of public art, Parcours invites artists and visitors to engage with Basel’s 1000-year-old urban and architectonic heritage.
"I’m fascinated by film because it creates representations of reality and doesn’t try to imitate it. This quality is particularly fitting for my work, where ambiguity, absurdity and confusion all play a role. […] In recent years I have developed an interest in creating a language where image, text and stereo don’t respond to or illustrate one another too literally, where they float together in one container, sometimes meeting and other times drifting apart. In most cases there is a conclusion that doesn’t offer an obvious resolution. This leaves gaps for the imagination, offering a different understanding of these elements while maintaining the work as one coherent entity." Basim Magdy
Basim Magdy makes films that dialogue with the traditions of painting and poetry. Realism, surrealism and science fiction complement one another as narrative modes that take viewers through visually compelling, immersive and other-worldly artworks.
The screening will be preceded by a live conversation between curator Filipa Ramos and Basim Magdy. The artist will be present. Total running time: 76 min.
