Jeremy Shaw: Liminals
5 October – 10 December 2017

Presented by The Vinyl Factory x KÖNIG Galerie

The Vinyl Factory and KÖNIG Galerie are excited to announce the first UK solo exhibition by Canadian artist Jeremy Shaw. The show will feature Shaw’s latest work Liminals (2017); a pseudo-documentary science fiction film about a marginalized society of the future attempting to save humanity from extinction through transcendental activities. Set against a 1970s cinema vérité aesthetic, Liminals follows eight subjects as they engage in varying cathartic ritualistic behaviors in an effort to access The Liminal – a paraspace between the physical and the virtual where they believe humankind can evolve forward from it’s imminent extinction. These scenes, narration, interviews and music eventually build to a hypnotic and immersive climax in which the viewer is implicated in the phenomenon themselves.

Liminals premiered at this year’s 57th Venice Biennial Viva Arte Viva and forms the second part in a series Shaw began with Quickeners (2014). He is currently at work on the third part of this trilogy that will be presented in its entirety at Kunstverein Hamburg, Germany, in 2018.

The exhibition also features new optical sculptures from Shaw’s “Towards Universal Pattern Recognition” series. These works present found archival photos of people in various states of religious or technological rapture under custom-machined prismatic acrylic. The resulting kaleidoscopic repetition and distortion of the image explicitly illustrates that the subject is experiencing a phenomenon that is skewing their perception of reality.

Jeremy Shaw’s work explores altered states and the cultural and scientific practices that aspire to map transcendental experience. Often combining and amplifying strategies from the realms of conceptual art, ethnographic film, music video, mystical and scientific research, Shaw proposes a post-documentary space in which disparate ideals and belief-systems are put into crisis.

Jeremy Shaw (b. 1977, CA) lives and works in Berlin. In 2016, he won the prestigious Sobey Art Award. Shaw has had solo shows at MoMA PS1, NY; Schinkel Pavillon, DE; and MOCCA, CA; and has been featured in group exhibitions including the 57th Venice Biennale, IT; Manifesta 11, CH; Stedelijk Museum, NL; Kunsthalle Wien; AU; KW Institute, DE; Witte de With, NL; and Palais de Tokyo, FR. He has also participated in residencies including Fogo Island Arts, CA; ISCP, NY; and will be an artist-in-residence at The Hammer Museum, LA, in 2018. Jeremy Shaw is represented by KÖNIG GALERIE Berlin I London.
