Jeremy Shaw | Quickeners
KÖNIG GALERIE | Dessauerstrasse | 31.5.–28.6.2014
Press Release:

In the south-eastern portion of Area 23 - a deserted andderelict region once known in the late age of humancivilization as the Americas - a tiny population of Quantum Humans have been gathering, meeting together under a common bond.

Their aesthetic appearance is not unlike that of any Quantum Human; their biological and technological makeup the same, and their direct neural link to The Hiveconcurrent with our unified Quantum Human Society. They are immortal Quantum Humans, like you and I.

But there is one thing currently separating them fromour social order: The Quantum Humans of Area 23 areafflicted with an extremely rare disorder known as Human Atavism Syndrome - or H.A.S.

In the South Eastern portion of Area 23 - a deserted and derelict region once known in the late age of human civilization as the Americas - a tiny population of Quantum Humans have been gathering; meeting together under a common bond. Their aesthetic appearance is not unlike that of any Quantum Human, their biological and technological makeup the same, and their direct neural link to The Hiveconcurrent with our unified Quantum Human Society. They are immortal Quantum Humans, like you and I. But there is one thing currently separating them fromour social order. The Quantum Humans of Area 23 are afflicted with anextremely rare disorder known as Human Atavism Syndrome- or H.A.S. HAS is an atavism – a complex affliction whichunexplainably resurrects certain evolutionary traits or societal characteristics of distant ancestors - often not seen in centuries. In the case of the Quantum Humans suffering from HAS, these characteristics are linked directly to our Human Being predecessors – now extinct for over 400 years. The gatherings of Quantum Human HAS sufferers in Area 23 take shape as free-form physical congregations in which the afflicted re-enact elements of various cultural and religious practices learned via The Hive’s complete database of human history. Ritualistic behaviors representedhere include what was known as dancing, convulsive dancing, singing, shrieking, shouting, preaching, praying, testimonial-giving, speaking intongues, and the symbolic handling of what were, inhuman times, poisonous serpents. It is during these mimed ceremonial activities that the Quantum Humans with HAS detail a phenomenon that they refer to as “Quickening” – and define as a moment of pure cathartic transcendence achieved via a strictly organic biological means – disconnecting one completely from their direct neural link to The Hive and anyextraneous technology at all. Although the instance of a “Quickening” would violate all logic within our Quantum Human existence, it is the pursuit of this speculative phenomenon that has earned them the name:
Quickeners.

Quickeners was co-produced by Johann König, Berlin, the British Columbia Arts Council and the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève for the BIM 14, with the support of the Fmac, the FCAC and the MONA MUSEUM.
